The goal of a premier Medical School is to continually improve treatment for genetic and degenerative diseases and cancer. This can only be achieved if another, less visible but equally important, goal is reached every day. This goal is excellence in basic research. 

Every advance in medicine has been achieved by accident, through long and often obscure efforts that take years to come to fruition and require continuous human and financial investment. Researchers in the Department of Genetics and Development are continually working to improve our understanding of the Mechanisms that go awry in genetic and acquired diseases. Their effort is supported by federal agencies and by generous donors who recognize the transformative impact of fundamental research on health and longevity in our societies. Currently, the research enterprise in this country needs philanthropy more than ever, as federal research funding is declining. Hence, any generous donation to the Department of Genetics and Development will be dedicated entirely to research and the eventual cure of diseases.
